Cistoclemmys flavomarginata - Chinese Box Turtle, Yellow-margined Box Turtle |
The genus Cistoclemmys is comprised of a four species (Iverson, 2007): Cistoclemmys flavomarginata, Cistoclemmys galbinifrons, Cistoclemmys mccordi, and Cistoclemmys serrata (hybrid). Cistoclemmys flavomarginata has three recognized subspecies, C. f. evelynae (Ernst and Lovich 1990), C. f. flavomarginata (Gray 1863), C. f. sinensis (Hsü 1930). Description: Formerly of the genus Cuora, C. flavomarginata commonly reach a SCL of 12 - 20 cm with some individual reaching up to 22 cm. Coloration is similar throughout the species & subspecies. Carapace is dark brown with reddish/chestnut marks in the center of each carapacial scute with a notable vertebral stripe beginning on the first vertebral and terminating on the fifth. The edge of the marginal scutes is yellow as is the bridge. Plastron is predominately black with slight yellow edges extending from the bridge. The head is olive dorsally with orange checks and lower jaw. A single yellow stripe begins at the eye and extends to the back of the head. Sexual dimorphism does occur with males possessing significantly larger tails and a concave plastron while females are larger but have flat plastrons with significantly smaller tails than the male. It can be noted too that mature males develop a more robust head with a thickening of the prefrontal scales. When excited (mating) the male's checks become an intense reddish orange.
